The answer lies in the inventive program Amazon put into place about six months ago where they discount the price of the Kindle by about one third if you're able to tolerate a tiny ad on the bottom of the menu screen, though not the reading screen, and a sponsored screensaver.
They call these Kindles, which are the same in every other way, Special Offers and Sponsored Screensavers versions. And these are the cheapest Kindles you can buy.
The sponsored screensavers are definitely not a negative at all since when you turn on your Kindle to use it, the screensaver goes away.
As for the advertisements, they take up simply a small space on the base of the home page only.
These advertisements, though, are the secret to making the cheapest Kindle Touch cost even less, even down to nothing, by the time you get money back from the coupons and discounts on things that you would buy anyhow.
Most Kindle owners are Amazon.com shoppers already, and as the owner of a Special Offers model you will, over the course of just a few months, be offered money off discount codes that are good for any Amazon purchase.
