Reviewing The Nook Tablet
Amazon gave Barnes & Noble a rude shock when they entered the book retail business and ever since B&N have been playing catch up and to a certain extent attempting to follow in Amazon's innovative footsteps. Creating an eReader probably never occurred to B&N before Amazon's Kindle came along and now the Kindle Fire is here, B&N have answered with their own Nook Tablet device.
The Nook Tablet costs $250 which is $50 more than its Amazon rival but for this you get 1 GB RAM, 16GB storage, longer battery life, a Micro SD card reader to expand the memory up to 32GB and a microphone letting you narrate bedtime stories to your kids which they can hear if you're working late. Except for that the hardware is pretty similar with a 7 inch touch sensitive screen and a 1GHz dual core processor within.
Nook Tablet is designed primary as a media consumption device but if you're planning to mostly use it to read ebooks then you'll notice that your eyes will become strained after a while because of the backlit LCD screen. In this respect, eReaders which use the e-Ink technology are still the best way to read ebooks as the screen will not strain your eyes.
Barnes & Noble do not have the same vast media library as Amazon though they do boast of an eBook store with over 2.5 million ebooks that you can download. For streaming pictures and Television shows the Nook Tablet comes pre-loaded with NetFlix and Hulu And which gives you access to literally hundreds of thousands of movies. For streaming and listening to music you have got the option of using the preloaded Pandora Internet radio app which streams music for free or you can get MP3's from the Rhapsody store.
The Nook Tablet includes 16GB of storage space and you need to use a 32 GB MicroSD card to grow the amount of media files you can store so if you've got your own library of videos and music you can easily transfer them across and watch them from anywhere even when there is no Wi Fi connection. One massive advantage the Nook Tablet has is the support for a wide variety of video and music codecs, so it doesn't matter if your mpegs are in MP4, AVI, WMV, 3GP, 3G2 MKV, WEBM, H.264, MPEG-4, H.263 or VP8, the Nook handles them all.
Just like with the Kindle Fire, the Nook is designed to essentially be a media consumption device but can also double up as a productiveness device for short durations although it isn't going to be as useful as something like the iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab. For basic office jobs like sending and receiving email, calendar scheduling, reviewing reports and shows the Nook is an ideal substitute.
It is a tricky call to say if the Nook is a better device than the Kindle Fire. In terms of media libraries the Fire beats the Nook hands down as there is so much more content available and a greater range of programmes available, but in terms of hardware the Nook packs a much larger punch for just $50 extra.
